Message from our Chair, Lyndal Plant
Australian communities receive massive economic benefits from urban trees. Increasing urban tree canopy could save billions of healthcare dollars each year while improving our health and wellbeing and reducing the strain on hospitals, doctors and paramedics, but our cities and towns are losing tree cover. The benefits urban trees provide justify significant investment in green streets and healthy neighbourhood planning aligned to tree cover targets. Last month we saw why tree species trials and protecting established trees are so important, but the bottom line is we need more trees. This month we look at how effective tree protection legislation is well overdue, boosting canopy cover, and we report on a recent workshop for women who work in arboriculture and urban forestry to improve our cities and towns.
